Very cool idea as a matter of fact, I had it myself a few months ago when I
was setting nagios up here. The idea occurred to me to try and create a
plug-in. After kludging together a cgi script to parse the status files and
give me that on a web page I determined that it was harder and more time 
consuming than I thought and I haven't really looked at it since. I would
think that you could do something like that, and incorporate in something
else to check port 4559 for hfaxd and you'd have a decent plug-in. It goes
on my to do list, but not very high up :)
