Apologies; just got to this. 

If it's installed using the RedHat style /etc/init.d script, you should
be able to do

# service hylafax stop
# killall faxgetty
# service hylafax start

and the second line may well be unnecessary.

Note that shutting down the *service* is *not* defined to kill the
faxgetty off; at least not permanently -- it might be your data getty
as well, after all.

For what it's worth (which is probably not much in your case :-}), if
you *don't* have it installed that was (as an 'Init service'), you
should fix that.
