hylafax server accepts ps, tiff (and recently pdf)

if the file is in another format then the client is reponsible for 
a conversion in one of theses formats. In your case the client is sendfax

AFAIK there is a table used by sendfax to find commands to do the corresponding
conversions. this table is in a textfile in your hylafax installation.

maybe try man sendfax or man config
maybe try sendfax -vv -d 123 /etc/hosts
