Thank you for your interest & help.
I did place the faxgetty entry in /etc/inittab and ran 'faxstat' as you suggested:-
root# faxstat
HylaFAX scheduler on localhost.localdomain: running
Still I seem unable to set up Client Access. 'hfaxd' nor 'faxclean' appear to execute on the command line!
From the download manual I assume I should be able to run 'hfaxd' for the Client setup.
