HylaFAX does this.
However, it does this before placing the call.

So h=HylaFAX

- 1st call to number 123
- h encodes 1d
- h places call
- h sees remote capabilities and records them into info/123

- 2nd call to number 123
- h sees capabilities in info/123 and encodes 1d or 2d accordingly
- h places call
- usually remote answers with the same capabilities of previous time
- so h has encoded the fax ok
- if remote answers with different capabilities (1st time said 2d, and now
it says 1d) then there's an error about 1d/2d mismatch, h aborts, records
new capabilities in info/123, and next time it will use 1d
