Yes it is possible, using Sportsters anyway.
Other models may be different.

Is that actually possible? My experience with, at least, Couriers, is
that the lower voltage units used barrel connectors, and the higher
voltage ones (21VAA, IIRC) used the 4-pin connector that is impossible to
replace.
Perhaps the Sporty's are different; it's a matter of personal policy to
stay as far away from those as I can. ;-)
