WOW!  Thank you for your help!  Would you please take to time to explain the
meaning of the different lines?

I wound up using the last line.  I got the system down to one error.  I was
getting an exit status 1 with a error "undefined reference to
`atexit@@GLIBC_2.0' "

I searched the web for that term and found this (
http://sources.redhat.com/ml/binutils/2001-03/msg00127.html ) that mentioned
the binutils package.   I updated my binutils packages, (I'm guessing it
needed to match my updated GLIBC version) and WALLA!   It started compiling
like a champ!

Thanks again.  Now off to run faxsetup! (that is after I verify that the
modem is operational via minicom :)  )
