I can't be absolutely certain, but I believe you're getting bitten by
the dread "libtiff incompatibility" error.  Check the HOWTO, I
believe the gory details are all in there.  www.hylafax.org/howto/

Quick test: run top(1).  If a fax process is stuck at 100%
utilization, that's the problem.
