This seems to have worked, as I can see from the /var/log/messages/:

Dec 20 15:03:15 home FaxQueuer[250]: HylaFAX (tm) Version 4.1beta2

Dec 20 15:03:15 home HylaFAX[253]: HylaFAX SNPP Protocol Server: restarted.
Dec 20 15:03:17 home FaxGetty[273]: OPEN /dev/ttyS0
Dec 20 15:03:30 home FaxGetty[273]: MODEM /

Strange is the last modem entry there....
anyway, receiving faxes worked at least once now :-|
but sending is a mess. As another user reported (today?), the transmission
breaks after a few lines, some of the stuff is unreadable, this looks like the
same problem I have here. (May switching from class2 to class1-modem help?)

And....it still is trying to lock /dev/modem:

Dec 20 15:15:39 home HylaFAX[480]: Filesystem has SysV-style file creation
semantics.
Dec 20 15:15:39 home FaxQueuer[250]: SUBMIT JOB 18
Dec 20 15:15:40 home FaxSend[604]: Unknown speaker volume "on"; using "quiet"
Dec 20 15:15:42 home FaxGetty[273]: ANSWER: Can not lock modem device
Dec 20 15:15:44 home FaxSend[604]: MODEM /
Dec 20 15:15:45 home FaxSend[604]: SEND FAX: JOB 18 DEST 0211 470 9008 COMMID
00000040
Dec 20 15:16:40 home FaxQueuer[250]: NOTIFY: bin/notify "doneq/q18" "done"
"1:00"
Dec 20 15:16:46 home FaxGetty[273]: MODEM /

I checked /var/spool/fax/etc/config.ttyS0 and
/etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config, but couldnt find anything about /modem.......
Where is that message coming from?

Cheers
Axel
