Yup, that's cause it's not there.  ;-)

The problem, I believe, is that there's no standardised way for
serially connected analog modems to report DTMF, much less to handle
the timing.  Yes, you could do this, but I think you might have to run
vgetty on the port and have *it* hand off to faxgetty (the opposite of
the usual scheme of things) to get what you want.

Alternatively you could modify faxgetty to know how to do this.

I don't *think* I've heard of anyone who's already hammering this nail,
but I could be wrong.

Are you/do you have handy a programmer, and how much effort is
justified here?  Yes, technically, faxgetty could be modified to do this
sort of thing.  You're not the only one who wants to do DID...
