First, I'm not experienced with Debian's version numbering scheme, but my
guess is that 4.0.2 means 4.0pl2, which means that your HylaFAX version is
quite antiquated. It most likely will be beneficial to install 4.1beta2 or
current CVS.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that current HylaFAX issues *any* AT
commands to the modem that are not either default HylaFAX settings or are
in the config.<devid> file. If the problem is with a default setting, then
you need to issue a corrective setting in the config file.
If you read 'man config' you'll see that the default setting for
ModemCommaPauseTimeCmd is 'ATS8=2'. Since issuing this command causes
ERROR, then my suggestion would be to add this line to your config.<devid>
file:
ModemCommaPauseTimeCmd: AT
which should override the ATS8=2 setting.
