Once faxgetty has a few moments to initialise the modem, you should see
"Running and idle" from faxstat. If you don't, then you've improperly
configured your modem.

Yes, that line is suspicious indeed. Please forget about the "faxmodem"
command since you're using FaxGetty here - you can use faxstate still, but not
faxmodem. The error line indicated that you've selected a bogus modem speed.  I
drive my PCMCIA modem as follows:

ModemType:              Class2
ModemRate:              38400           # rate for DCE-DTE communication
ModemFlowControl:       rtscts          # default

Note that the ModemRate is not equivalent to the baud rate of fax
transmission. I suspect you have confused the issue (and perhaps HylaFAX) by
setting it to 14400.

Otherwise I don't see anything untoward in your logfiles . . . just normal
PCMCIA Card Services stop/start and some job killing ;-)
