3COM stands behind their products very well. You can get overnight advance 
swap on that modem. Try (800)NET-3COM.

Quite a number of people have them working in Class 2.0 mode successfully 
too in spite of the plethora of dismal information to the contrary posted here.

I personally believe sticking with 3COM will be one totally acceptable 
choice. Of course Multitech has had a long standing active technical 
support program in place and they too are good. You might call the 
marketing or presales dept for those companies and make them aware of the 
rather substantial UNIX community if they aren't already, that uses HylaFAX 
and maybe they will contribute an optimized config file.
