PLEASE: fax goes to the WRONG number

Please, before telling me to upgrade, see if the upgrade would solve
this specific problem.
I'm willing to upgrade, but I don't like to upgrade without knowing if
the upgrade has any possibility to solve this specific problem.

Linux kernel 2.0.33, hylafax 4.0pl1 (from the libc5 rpm hylafax-4.0-6).
Modem MultiTech MT1932ZDX or another class1 modem (Sidin).
The problem happens with 2 different modems; so the modem is not guilty.

PROBLEM:
1) 2 fax are queued
fax1 for number1
fax2 for number2

2)
fax1 is tried, but no-carrier/no-answers

3)
fax2 is tried, but no-carrier/no-answers

4)
fax1 is re-tried, the log shows that hylafax calls number1, but who
answers is number2. fax1 is sent to number2

5)
fax2 is re-tried succesfully

6)
RESULT: both faxes go to number2.

number1 and number2 are random, every time they are different.

This problem happened 5 times this year. Every time the problem happened
after a failed fax attempt to number2:
- failed fax attempt to number2
- fax for number1 goes to number2
- fax for number2 goes to number2

I have the the complete logs of the 4 tries of points 2 3 4 5. I can
send the complete logs to whoever wants to see them.

This is just the relevant section. The remote CSI is real, it's not
misconfigured.

Any idea on the cause of this?

Thanks.
