Modem often hangs

Hi all. I'm using hylafax-4.1beta1-1rh6 on an RH6 box with a USR
Sportster 28.8 modem in Class 1 mode, and when it works, it works well.
The problem is occasionally it will get stuck in an answer mode, and never
time out and disconnect, tieing up the modem for other calls.
How can I resolve this?
