The best solution is to change to a better modem.  Otherwise there is
a work around for at least some versions of the firmware which should
be linked from the web site and is definitely in the list archives;
it modifies one of the modem setup strings.

I seem to remember that those ones that work in Class 1 don't have
a problem in Class 1.
