What in the? I am going to be *VERY* surprised if these codes
work. M0 or M1 affect a binary register that turns on sound for
the modem. The standard available settings for the *level* of
sound are L0 through L3. The modem will probably barf on L5 and L7.

There is a difference between the data transmission rate between the
computer and the modem, and the data transmission between the two
modems. This ModemRate involves the transmission between the computer
and the modem: the modems normally negotiate the rate they can handle
between themselves.

There is a whole different set of commands for each mode. Class 1 has the
hosting computer do a lot more of the actual work of the faxing. Class 2
is a later standard that worked pretty well and offloaded a lot of the work
to the modem. Class 2.0 came later, is popular in 56K modems, and from
reports here doesn't work very well.

You can almost always use a modern modem quite effectively in Class 1 mode.
