Gentleman with the SUSE distributions: most of the HylaFAX RPM distributions
were compiled on RedHat machines.

Can you compile the HylaFAX from source on your systems and
let us know how weel this works?

Also, try running "sh -x probemodem" instead of just probemodem,
so we can see which darn stty command is failing.
