Ahh. GNU patch has changed its style somewhat, and you should examine
changing to the source directory and typing:
patch -p1 < ../whatever-its-name.patch
The -p1 tells it how much of the directory name to strip off.

Half a patch is *NOT* better than none. You might consider hopping
directly to the new 4.1beta1 release at www.hylafax.org: while
a beta release, it's got these and a number of other patches
already built in....
