This will not happen if your /etc/passwd file is correct, as the numeric
ID will match uucp first.  Although you may have inserted fax before uucp,
it is more likely that you have inserted it with a different user ID number.

Note that the directory listings would have had normal spaces, not 
non-break spaces, so there was something broken with your mail program
(HTML mail being quoted?).
