If you mean the tones during a fax session, you have to set the
parameter "SpeakerVolume" in your modem-config-file to "off".

I had the same problem. It's a problem with device locking. You have to
add the "lock" option to your /etc/ppp/options file or the appropriate
configuration file for diald.
