That's almost 5.5 seconds to train the modem.  Making a call across
the office PABX it only takes 2.5 seconds.  I suspect it has had to
try more than one speed, because of a failure at the highest speed.

That's a very short time after carrier.  My guess is that the line 
quality is unusable and the your modem has lost the remote modem's
carrier.

You should probably check flow control settings, just in case RTS is
being interpreted as RTS rather than host initiated flow control.

Note the abort is at the start of the high speed transmission of the
actual fax image.
