Hi,

do not create the fifos manualy. Try removing FIFO| and ttyS0|  
and run then faxmodem. Also ttyS0 is the wrong name and has wrong
permissions.

It looks here like :

prw-------   1 uucp     uucp            0 Jan 22 09:46 FIFO
prw-------   1 uucp     wheel           0 Dec 31 08:30 FIFO.ttyS0
