Cheap 33.6 modems and data dialups, FIXED!

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Found it! The stupid thing would not handle data calls, and I was
forced to use the 14.4 modems for data until I figured it out.

The modem is a Performa 33.6. The difficulty was that in Class 1,
which was the only fax mode it supports, the "auto-adaptive" mode
did not work. So I had to teach it to remain in Class 0 (data) mode
when idling by adding this to the config file.

  #
  # The remainder of this configuration is included so that the
  # modem "idles" in Class 0 while not sending or receiving facsimile.
  #
ModemSetupAACmd:	AT+FCLASS=0	# leave modem in class 0

I also had to change the AnswerRotary value to keep that line in
data mode as a default instead of fax mode, for faster answering.

AnswerRotary: "data fax"	# rotates between
  AnswerBias: 1

I'm happy! I can now get the cheap dial-up to work, which is much faster
than my local ISP and keeps passwords off Internet.

Now, should this ModemSetupAACmd be set up in the "skel" or "class1"
files in order to be that default for everyone? I'm certain that
the el-cheapo 33.6 modem is not the only one with this problem as
the configuration stands.
