Shared Libraries (DSO) - Advisable?

The Hylafax configuration files have the ability to build Hylafax using
shared libraries, but only on Irix systems. On the other hand, the
TIFF tools, from the same source, have shared library support for multiple
platforms (although that for linux is trivially broken as the result of
a missing * at the end of "linux" in a case statement in the configure
script).

I'm wondering about trying to merge the shared library building support
from TIFF to Hylafax, but first I'd be interested in whether it is
worthwhile. Shared libraries can reduce the disk footprint, and may
reduce the memory footprint, but only if multiple, different, programs
are running at the same time. On the other hand, they increase the
memory footprint of a single program (one or more instances) and increase
the load time.

I'm interested in Hylafax for very occassional use, but it would be
interesting to have views for both heavy and occasional use.
