asking for feedback on installation problems

Hi,
I signed on the list hoping to find some help with the following problem:
I just installed the software on a Linux box and it took a while to get   
it send out a fax. The program is maintaining a status file in   
/var/spool/fax/status which contains: "Waiting for the modem to come   
ready".
The sendfax command is placing the job in the queue, but it remains there   
because the status file never says "ready". Deleting the file the job is   
sent out successfully, but the status file comes back with the same   
message and the next job gets queued and stays there again waiting   
forever.
What process is taking care and how of the status file?
