Re: another failure due to Unspecified Transmit Phase B ?
The modem is returning corrupt versions of the end of line character.
I can't really explain this, except for a broken modem, as the other
likely cause, a cable fault, would not just affect the end of line.
Steve Wertz message, which arrived just after yours appears to be about
the same problem and suggests that there is a design flaw in the Sportsters.
Note that this is undeclared MIME quoted printable.

The remaining gibberish is the start of the fax scan line data.
